    Sensory Night Hike

    Dates: Tuesday, April 22, 8pm-9pm

    Join Director of Education, Kim Botelho, on a sensory night hike to explore a local woodland after dark. You will test your night vision, listen for nocturnal animals and learn about their adaptations, take a solo journey if dare, and more. Space is limited to 15 participants so you must register in advance. Appropriate for ages 8 and up. This hike will take place at the state forest down Lover's Lane.
     
    Marine Ecology Field Trips

    Dates: Monday - Friday, June 9-August 22, 10am-12pm

    What sea creatures live in Nantucket Harbor? Find out as you help collect, identify, and release fish, crabs, shrimp, and other animal life! The Harbor is filled with interesting animals that will amaze you in their shapes, colors, and habits. This program is part of a long term research project and is interesting for adults and children alike.

    Participants must have their own vehicle.

     
    Beach Discovery Field Trip

    Dates: Mondays, June 16 - August 18, 2pm - 4pm

    Go from interested beach visitor to expert beach comber! Join us to learn how to identify the crabs, shells, sponges, and seaweeds commonly found along the beach. Learn about the lives of these animals as we walk along one of Nantucket's beautiful beaches.

     
    Night Marine Ecology Field Trip

    Nantucket Harbor teems with marine life at night that is not visible in the day. Join our Aquarium staff to learn about the fish, squid, crabs, and more that come out to feed at night in the shallow water. Meet at the MMA Aquarium, 28 Washington Street.

    What better way to experience Nantucket than underwater? Nantucket is known for its ocean, harbor, beach, and dune ecosystems! We will explore these aquatic habitats (and discover the animals that live there) through activities such as snorkeling, fishing, beach combing, and more.     Do you think you could survive if you were alone in the wilderness? Come learn survival techniques such as how to read a map and compass, make rope from native reeds, forage for edible plants, and build a shelter out of nothing but what is found around you.     Nantucket was a unique place for girls and women in Maria's day. With so many husbands and fathers at sea, island women worked outside the home running shops and Nantucket girls stayed in school longer than their brothers. Come learn what life was like for Nantucket women as we visit some of the sites where they worked, learn about some of their famous exploits, and create some art and crafts projects based on what we learn.

    Scrapbooks and Dreams

    Scrapbooking is not something new. Women and children often created scrapbooks in the 19th century, including Maria Mitchell and her family. It was considered a great rainy day activity! People also created "dream" houses and "dream" rooms by cutting pictures from catalogs and creating scenes. Come create your own "dream" room and scrapbook to take home.

     
     
    Mystery History Ghost Tour

    Marine Biology Boot Camp

    Have you ever wanted to be a marine biologist? Then, join us as we learn about our oceans from the plankton to the sharks and everything that is in between! We will snorkel the harbor to discover and identify fish and invertebrate species, kayak in local estuaries to learn about eel grass ecosystems, and learn about physical oceanography from a sailboat. Activities will, also, include fishing with rods and reels, seining, beach combing, and more! In addition, we will study invertebrate and fish anatomy through dissections, firsthand observations, and a visit to our aquarium. Please note: Participants must be able to demonstrate strong swimming skills in order to snorkel.

    If you prefer land to water or have already completed our Marine Biology Boot Camp, this is the class for you! Join us as we discover the wonders of Nantucket terrestrial ecosystems through hiking, seining, orienteering, collecting, and more. We will learn how to catch and identify various insects, safely handle snakes, turtles, frogs, and salamanders, and explore hidden areas of Nantucket interior. We will, also, participate in ecological research conducted by MMA scientists and complete our own scientific project which will be displayed in our Natural Science Museum.

     
     
    TEEN NATURALIST LEADERSHIP PROGRAM (AGES 13-15)

     
    Marine and Terrestrial Ecology

    During this program, students will explore the diverse marine and terrestrial ecosystems all around Nantucket Island. Participants will study topics such as fish and invertebrate anatomy, physical oceanography, marine and terrestrial ecology, as well as animal classification and behaviors. They will participate in activities including snorkeling, seining, hiking, kayaking/paddle boarding, beach combing, animal tracking, and volunteering in our aquarium. Additional opportunities may include fish and invertebrate dissections (including sharks), fish printing, plankton collections, shellfishing, and more! Please note: Participants must be able to demonstrate strong swimming skills in order to snorkel. We ask that all students interested in volunteering at the aquarium or museum complete this program.
