    Marine Ecology Field Trips

    What sea creatures live in Nantucket Harbor? Find out as you help collect, identify, and release fish, crabs, shrimp, and other animal life! The Harbor is filled with interesting animals that will amaze you in their shapes, colors, and habits. This program is part of a long term research project and is interesting for adults and children alike.

    Participants must have their own vehicle.  Meet in the Elementary School parking lot near the Ice Rink. More Information.

     
    Saltmarsh Field Trip

    Limited time only!
    This field trip is part collecting species for display at the Aquarium and part learning about the very important saltmarsh and eel grass ecosystems.  We will use a seine net to sample fish and invertebrates, study birds searching for breakfast, and look for unique finds along the beach.     Family Snorkeling with Digital Photography

    Come join us at Jetties Beach as we experience the beautiful marine life of Nantucket Island! Our guides will teach you proper snorkling techniques, how to use our Nikon coolpix waterproof cameras, and will point out any local marine life you come across including horseshoe crabs, pipe fish, puffer fish, moon snails, American eels, flounder and more! You will have online access to your images within 1 week of your program.  Swimming experience is recommended. All equipment is included.

    All children must be at least 10 years old and accompanied by an adult.

     
    Beach Discovery Field Trip

    Go from interested beach visitor to expert beach comber! Join us to learn how to identify the crabs, shells, sponges, and seaweeds commonly found along the beach. Learn about the lives of these animals as we walk along one of Nantucket's beautiful beaches.

    Nantucket Harbor teems with marine life at night that is not visible in the day.     ARTstronomy

    Art and science collide in an afternoon of fun for young children. Using pictures and stories, kids are introduced to the wonders of the universe and their place in it. They then create their own cosmic works of art using various media, learning some basic astronomy in the process and developing a personal connection with the universe.

    Blast Off!

    Dates: Select Tuesdays, June 16 - August 18, 10:30 am - 12 pm at Nobadeer Fields

    Children discover the wonders of space exploration by building and launching their own model rockets. The fun begins by constructing and flying paper airplanes to learn about gravity and atmosphere on Earth, Mars and the Moon. They then move on to rockets propelled by air and water to learn more about the science of flight. Finally, they assemble and launch their own model rockets under the safe supervision of instructors.

    Robot Explorers

    After an introduction to robots and robotic spacecraft that have explored our solar system, teams assemble robot cublets and practice using a robotic arm to learn how robots work. They then program roving robots to complete a variety of tasks. The program ends with a fun robot competition.

    Stars & Senses Night Hike

    Dates: Select Thursdays, June 18-August 20, 8pm-9pm

    Join Director of Education, Kim Botelho and Astronomy Educator, Caprice Phillips for an evening hike under the stars.  During the walk you will participate in a color vistion activity, learn how our eyes adjust to the darkness, listen for nocturnal animals, take a solo journey if you dare, and enjoy a minty snack while learning about bioluminescence.  At the end of the walk, sit back and relax while you hear stories of summer constellations and more.  

    This program takes place at the State Forest on Lover's Lane

    AstroKids Nights

    Drop your children at the Natural Science Museum while you blast off for dinner during AstroKids Nights. Your child will play indoor and outdoor games, create works of art, complete scavenger hunts, or go on a night hike. At the museum they will also have a chance to visit our education animals each night.

    This program is for ages 6-12.

    Join us for our first Spring Discovery Camp, Back to Nature, during April vacation.  The camp will run from Monday, April 20 - Friday, April 24th from 8:50 am - 1 pm.  This camp is open to ages 6-11.  Not only will we get back to exploring nature after a long, snowy winter but,  we will also discover how our actions have an impact on the island and our communities. In honor of Earth Day, campers will learn what each of them can do to give Back to Nature.

    A Walk with Maria Mitchell of Nantucket Town

    A unique collaborative walking tour that brings the natural and historical world of Nantucket together in one!     Historic Mortar and Plaster Demonstration  
       
    Come learn about the fantastic scientific process behind slaking lime for mortar and plaster (see it boil and bubble!) and how you can preserve your historic house using centuries old techniques. Island architectural conservator and mason Pen Austin utilizes historic processes to work on historic chimneys and historic plaster both on and off the island. Witness the process of slaking mortar, the importance of using historically accurate methods that help to ensure the stability of your chimney and your home, and the evolution of the fireplace and hearth! Limited space, reservations necessary. FREE in Celebration of Nantucket’s Preservation Month. Donations Accepted.

    Preserving Monuments: How to Clean Gravestones  
       Regular Price: $15.00 Member Price: $10.00
    Join the curator of the Mitchell House and the Prospect Hill Cemetery Association historian for a short talk about stone monuments and their conservation. The class will then move to the Prospect Hill Cemetery where participants will learn how to properly clean stone monuments. Class will be hands on so wear appropriate clothes and bring protective eyewear (sunglasses will suffice). Please Note: This class is to teach others so that they may clean their family’s stone monuments. One must speak with the sextant of a cemetery before doing this. One must not work on stones not belonging to their family unless it is through a special program that has been condoned by the cemetery and other officials. Limited space, reservations necessary.

    Four Centuries Domestic Tour

    A unique collaborative walking tour with the Curator of the Mitchell House, and Nantucket Preservation Trust’s Executive Director and Nantucket Historical Association’s Education Staff that looks at the changes in domestic life over four centuries and how it shaped homes, buildings, neighborhoods, and land use. Participants should meet at the Oldest House on Sunset Hill (tour will end on Main Street). No reservations necessary.

    Get your boots, nets, and binoculars ready! Join us as we explore ALL of the ecosystems of Nantucket. We will wade through marshes, fish in our ponds and salt marshes, survey mudflats, canoe among the turtles and waterfowl, explore fields and forests all while searching for the insects, mammals, snakes, birds, frogs, turtles, and more that inhabit them! Learn what makes these ecosystems unique through hands-on activities, games, and guided investigations.

    What better way to experience Nantucket than underwater? Nantucket is known for its ocean, harbor, beach, and dune ecosystems! We will explore these aquatic habitats (and discover the animals that live there) through activities such as snorkeling, fishing, beach combing, and more. We willl, also, use dip nets, seine nets, and fish traps to catch even more underwater species. Please note: Participants must be able to demonstrate strong swimming skills in order to join the snorkeling portion of the activities.

Come learn survival techniques such as how to read a map and compass, make rope from native reeds, forage for edible plants, and build a shelter out of nothing but what is found around you. In addition, we will learn the basics of tracking deer, mice, birds, and insects as we find them and study their behaviors. Each session will have a unique theme that will be determined by the summer instructors.

    Green Guardians

    Would you like to help keep Nantucket beautiful? Do you need community service hours for your school, club, or honor society? Would you like the experience of working with some of the island's conservation organizations such as the Nantucket Conservation Foundation or the Nantucket Islands Land Bank? If you said yes to any of these, this is the camp for you! Each morning will begin with a 1-2 hour service project such as beach clean-ups, removing invasive plants, mapping plant and animal populations, or maintaining trails. Afterwards, you will be off on an island adventure to enjoy the rest of the day. Activities include kayaking, snorkeling, hiking, seining, and more! At the end of camp you will receive a certificate of completion for your hours of service as a Green Guardian.

    TEEN NATURALIST LEADERSHIP PROGRAM (AGES 13-16)

     
    Marine and Terrestrial Ecology

    During this program, students will explore the diverse marine and terrestrial ecosystems all around Nantucket Island. Participants will study topics such as fish and invertebrate anatomy, physical oceanography, marine and terrestrial ecology, as well as animal classification and behaviors. They will participate in activities including snorkeling, seining, hiking, kayaking, beach combing, animal tracking, and volunteering in our aquarium. Additional opportunities may include invertebrate dissections, fish printing, plankton collections, shellfishing, and more! Please note: Participants must be able to demonstrate strong swimming skills in order to snorkel. We ask that all students interested in volunteering at the aquarium or museum complete this program. Each session will have a unique theme that will be determined by the summer instructor.

    In addition to exploring the marine and terrestrial ecosystems, learning skills that will enable you to volunteer in the MMA Aquarium and Natural History Museum, and going on adventures around Nantucket, this course offers you the opportunity to work with other conservation organizations. Throughout the week, you will gain 5 hours of community service with our partners including the Nantucket Islands Land Bank and the Nantucket Conservation Foundation. You will learn skills such as identifying and mapping invasive species using a professional app, techniques for bundling Phragmites, and you will turn your collected beach trash into a found items educational sculpture that will be on display at the MMA Aquarium. We ask that all students interested in volunteering at the aquarium or museum complete at least one of the NLP courses. Each session will have a unique theme that will be determined by the summer instructor.
